The striker, 27, has an £84million release clause in his contract at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
But as revealed by SunSport, it is understood Gyokeres has a gentlemen's agreement with Sporting that he can leave for around £58-60m, which United CAN afford .
Gyokeres boasts a staggering record of 97 goals in 102 appearances for the Portuguese giants.
Of those, 66 goals came playing for Ruben Amorim when the pair worked together at Sporting.
And Amorim is desperate to be reunited with the striker - with his current No9s Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling for goals.
Hojlund has been linked with an exit away from Old Trafford with Inter Milan reportedly keen to offer £40m.
But he told Danish media this weekend that he has no intention of leaving .
The ex-Atalanta man said: "I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United .
"I'm looking forward to going on a summer holiday and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway.
"I know I can't get much out of reading things.
IT SHOULD come as no surprise that Sweden and Sporting Lisbon ace Viktor Gyokeres is wanted by Manchester United in their hunt for a new striker.
After all, he was one of the standout players at Sporting when Ruben Amorim was there as coach, with 54 goals and 13 assists in 52 games in 2024-25 for Sporting... after his 58-goal contribution tally last term.
The 27-year-old, who has a market value of £63m has had something of an unusual career path to get to this point, having flopped at Brighton before really igniting his career at Coventry.
His performances in the Championship were very strong and this led to a move to Portugal for an initial £17.5m.
Gyokeres now looks poised to take the next step in his career and it is easy to see why.
He is a modern striker with the ability to stretch opposition defences and make long and aggressive runs beyond the defensive line, while he has the skill to score a variety of different goals.
The issue for Gyokeres when it comes to a move to a club like Man Utd, however, is facing a low or medium block a lot of the time - a factor which has massively limited Rasmus Hojlund's effectiveness this term.
This means space behind the defence, where Gyokeres does his best work, is hard to come by for any striker.
While Gyokeres is by no means a poor technical player, with the ability to receive the ball in tighter areas and bring others into the game, this is not the biggest strength of his game.
He is more of a powerful forward who will thrive with balls played into the channels he can run on to in order to stretch the opposition.
"I know what the facts are - and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030.
"I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for a summer holiday and then hopefully a good pre-season."
United cannot offer Gyokeres any European football next season - let alone Champions League football.
But Amorim will hope his personal connection can entice Gyokeres, who is also wanted by Arsenal .
Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal also tried to hijack a deal by offering Gyokeres a contract worth nearly £30m in wages - but the 26-cap star snubbed the Middle East.
Amorim has already completed his £62.5m transfer to Old Trafford from Wolves .
And the Red Devils also remain keen on landing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
However, that deal has hit complications with Tottenham set to appoint Thomas Frank as their new manager.
